Since '96, with the introduction of the A3, the A4 (or Audi 80) is no longer the smallest Audi. But since the introduction of the A2, The A3 lost this place again. The A3 is based on the platform of the Golf IV, which is also shared by the TT. For that reason, these three cars have the amne technic in their all-wheel drive version: An electronically surveyed Haldex cutch distributes the power between front and rear axle. Audi of course calls it quattro, while Volkswagen calls it 4motion. Attention: The 2000 Passat 4motion, which is only a relabeled syncro is an oldschool quattro, using a Torsen centre diff! Old synchros have a viscous coupling with no electronics.

Starting in 2000, the A3 is availabe as a five door. It is now pretty close to the A4. The two additional doors blend nicely into body design. A variety of engines can be chosen for both body styles, but the 5-door is not sold as S3

This is the top-of-the-line A3, the S3. It has the 1.8T engine, known from the TT, where it has a bit more power. As with the other S models of Audi, it has quattro.
